Carbon Monoxide – Silent Killer

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon Monoxide is an odorless, colorless, tasteless and non-irritating toxic gas. These are the reason why its known as the “Silent Killer”.

Carbon Monoxide is the number one cause of poisoning deaths in the world. It is formed by the incomplete combustion of materials containing carbon. Carbon Monoxide enters the bloodstream through the lungs and reduces oxygen delivery to the body’s organs and tissues.

Health Canada indicates that Residential Maximum Exposure Limits for Carbon Monoxide are :

Averaging Time and CO concentration (ppm)

Exposures Critical Effects

1 hour / 25 ppm

Reduction in maximum duration of exercise in health individuals.

24 hour / 10 ppm

Reduction in ST segment in change time (sign of myocardial ischaemia) in individual with coronary artery disease.

(myocardial ischemia , deficiency of blood supply to the heart muscle.)

Carbon Monoxide  (CO)  Detectors Mandatory in Ontario

( Hawkins-Gignac Act – 2013 )

Everybody knows CO detectors are mandatory with Ontario law ( Hawkins-Gignac Act – 2013 ) . But please do not forget CO detectors only sniff out potential deadly levels.

They are designed to prevent acute poisoning (one time accidental poisoning). Most detectors first alert levels are set at 70 ppm. (Please check your co detectors manifacturer’s web site)

They are not designed to prevent chronic poisoning (multiple low level poisonings).

We are not dying, but we are slowly poisoning with low level CO.  The risk and danger of ongoing exposure to low levels of carbon monoxide is a genuine threat and danger to a far greater number of people.

Do not put yourself and your family including your pets at risk.

Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning and stop the silent killer with annual maintenance and tune-up.

Carbon monoxide detectors are a good second line of defence, but they do not eliminate the need for regular inspection and maintenance for safe use of your fuel burning appliances.

Call us for Annual Maintenance, before its too late !

Here are a few symptoms and effects from multiple exposures of lower levels carbon monoxide poisoning. (Please consult with your physician ).

  • Headaches,

  • Flu like symptoms,

  • Food poisoning like symptoms,

  • Unexplained nausea,

  • Chronic fatigue like symptoms,

  • Feeling of physical weakness,

  • Brain fog,

  • Potential developmental problems with children,

Please visit reference links for more information.

Many carbon monoxide symptoms and effects are caused by low level brain damage, damage/disruption of the endocrine (regulatory) system, and cell damage.

DO s and DONT s LIST ;

  • Get your fuel burning appliances preventive maintenance done annually,

  • Install Canada Standarts Association (CSA ) approved CO detectors on each floor of your home as per manufacturers instruction,

  • Never use BBQ indoors,

  • Never use gas range for heat and ensure to use ventilation hood for gas range,
